The impact of AI in the healthcare industry

AI has significantly impacted the medical sector and its use has become vital in the field.

Technology and AI for medical diagnostics have become essential tools for the industry. AI-powered solves the main challenges faced by the healthcare sector. Indeed, diagnosticians and medical practitioners require a new set of tools to manage high volumes of medical data quickly and precisely, enabling them to provide more accurate and objective treatment decisions, supported by quantitative data and adapted to the particular needs of patients. Based on the book Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach written by Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig in 1995, the authors define AI with four approaches that characterize it:

Artificial Intelligence applied to the healthcare industry, is based on the use of algorithms and software tools to predict a particular outcome through the analysis of medical data, aiming to help doctors and medical providers deliver more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.

What is the best use for AI in healthcare?

Today, the role of AI in the healthcare field has come to simplify processes and make healthcare more predictive improving preventive care recommendations. Indeed, AI processes algorithms and amounts of clinical information in a short time, which helps medical practitioners to make more accurate decisions. More specifically, AI is capable of describing and interpreting data, learning from it, and applying algorithms to provide solutions. In other words, AI could recognize a patient, review his or her medical record in a short time, compare it and provide guidelines to the medical professional based on that background.

For instance, in radiology, its use is remarkable. In fact, AI makes an impact by providing automation and therefore helps streamline the contouring process of radiotherapy size. Nowadays, the AI applications available for radiology help provide enhanced images and an improved workflow for image generation.

However, the use of AI not only is for radiology but also for all medical specialties. In general, the use of AI in the medical sector allows to:

  • Process huge amounts of clinical information in a short time
  • Ensure new and more effective ways of treating patients
  • Identify hidden patterns in data to provide better diagnoses

AI Diagnostics after the pandemic

Since the beginning of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a change in the global healthcare system and since then it was necessary to adapt even more to the use of new technologies. The health crisis made us realize the shortcomings of the healthcare system and showed us the path that the medical sector had to follow in the technological field to take advantage of all resources and manage the pandemic more efficiently.

During and after the pandemic, healthcare providers, researchers, and technology companies developed a wide range of alternatives based on artificial intelligence with the intent to prevent, track, diagnose and treat COVID-19. These AI systems have enabled physicians to access data that includes how the virus is transmitted, how the disease manifests in patients, and how it might be treated. AI has been useful for analyzing genetic data from virus samples and for discovering how the virus binds to cells using a distinct DNA code. AI techniques have also helped to identify potential drug therapies that could be used to treat COVID-19.

On the other hand, AI now offers help with other types of tests, such as the analysis of X-rays as mentioned above. There are different image processing AI programs able to detect lung abnormalities from chest X-rays and provide diagnoses of possible COVID-19 cases much faster than a human radiologist. Some hospital systems have developed their own AI tools to help diagnose COVID-19 and identify patients at higher risk of negative outcomes. Developers have also created AI models that aim to predict individual outcomes, such as identifying which patients are most at risk of requiring ventilator use.

However, the use of AI is not only limited to diagnosing and treating the virus but has also made it possible to find ways to avoid contact with people who have the disease. In fact, as a result of AI technologies, in the last few months, a new range of robots has emerged allowing to reduce the contact between patients and healthcare personnel, thus minimizing the risk of transmission. In China, for instance, some companies are using drones and robots with the ability to sanitize public areas without the need for human intervention to perform these tasks.

In this sense, we can see how AI is having a great impact to fight the pandemic and how new technologies continue to be indispensable not only in global health systems but also for humans in general.
