Austin is THE tech scene.  With entrepreneurs flocking to Austin monthly to get a taste of what the city offers, not just BBQ, but the access to angel investors, incubators and accelerators.

Every month, Applaudo and the Westbank Library sponsors 1 Million Cups in Austin, TX, a nationwide program in the US where innovators and entrepreneurship enthusiasts connect and support local startups while sharing a cup of coffee.

What is 1 Million Cups?

1 Million Cups was born based on the notion that entrepreneurs discover solutions and engage with their communities over a million cups of coffee. This program was founded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in 2012 with the goal to educate, engage and inspire entrepreneurs around the US. Till this day, 1 Million Cups has grown to more than 180 communities.

Entrepreneurs are able to be open about their business and the challenges they face, in a non-traditional pitch environment where they receive constructive criticism and support from a community of business leaders. 1 Million Cups empowers entrepreneurs with the tools and resources to break down those barriers that stand in their way of starting and growing their businesses.

“We believe that if you have an idea, you have a fundamental right to start a business to make it a reality.”
The Kauffman Foundation

Since 2017, Applaudo has sponsored 1 Million Cups in Austin, Texas. Katina Kenyon, VP of Sales and Marketing at Applaudo, is the lead organizer of this event in Austin.

“I myself was asked to present our business, Applaudo Studios, which is a nearshore software development agency, and since then I was hooked. The energy of the room, the willingness to help from the audience and the access to creative thinkers and experienced doers that entrepreneurs may not have access to, gives 1 Million Cup presenters a-ha moments. We’ve had entrepreneurs make 180-degree pivots of their business plans from their initial presentations to watching past presenters become successful start-ups,” says Katina Kenyon.

Today, for example, 1 Million Cups Austin was hosted by Reset, #hitreset, a previous 1MC presenter in Austin that partners with dinner-only restaurants to open up their beautiful spaces during the day to remote workers, for half the cost of traditional coworking spaces.  Who wouldn’t want to work out of a Reset location with views like these!

Check out the 2 companies that presented today:

Today we had the opportunity to meet Atandra Burman who is changing the way we approach and manage our hearts with RCE, a medical device, and technology company that has developed an innovative smart wearables solution combined with AI that can now afford Cardiologist, an early assessment in critical heart events. Their Triage Workflow exchanges recorded data with the cardiologist when a critical heart event is detected, allowing for an instant, life-saving decision and patient notification to seek immediate treatment.

We also heard from Tony Scallion a passionate educator who is changing how children learn with REDHOUSE Virtual Education. REDHOUSE is solving a problem with engagement in the classroom using Mixed reality for education. With target markets are Public, Private, charter schools and community program.
